Two Fingers, One Kevin

July 5, 2026

PORTLAND, OR — JULY 5 — Let the record show: the Fourth happened. All of it. To all of us. The Eagle does not currently have the staff, the legal team, or frankly the memory required to give you a full accounting of last night. What we can give you is a status report, written the way you write one the morning after — carefully, slowly, with a great deal of water nearby.

The bar is still standing. This was not guaranteed at several points.

The fireworks were, as always, someone's terrible idea executed with total commitment, and we are pleased to report that the resulting hand is expected to make a full recovery, fingers mostly reattached, dexterity pending, bar tab forgiven on account of trauma. Let this stand as the year's reminder that "held" and "thrown" are two different verbs and the difference matters.

Elsewhere: a stomach was pumped. Not for the first time in this bar's history, not for the last. The gentleman in question has been informed, gently, that the punch was never meant to be enjoyed at that pace, or possibly at all, and has agreed — from his hospital bed, with real conviction — to pace himself next year. We've heard that one before too.

And Kevin. Kevin, who went somewhere around 11 PM and did not fully return until sometime this afternoon, is finally, officially, out of the hole. Any hole. All holes. Kevin is horizontal, hydrated, and humbled, and has asked us to pass along that he remembers nothing and regrets less. We believe him on the first part.

This is the tax the Fourth collects every year, and every year we pay it, and every year the Eagle opens its doors again anyway — because that's the deal. You bring the chaos, we bring the ice, and somewhere around hour six it becomes a story you'll tell for a decade.

See you at the bar. Bring your own fingers this time.

COCKTAIL: THE DISCHARGE PAPERS

A recovery drink for the walking wounded. Low proof, high electrolyte, zero judgment.

Ingredients:

1.5 oz aged rum

1 oz coconut water

0.75 oz fresh lime juice

0.5 oz ginger syrup

Pinch of salt

Soda water to top

Garnish: lime wheel, paper umbrella (optional, for irony)

Build: Shake rum, coconut water, lime, ginger syrup, and salt over ice. Strain into a tall glass over fresh ice, top with soda. Drink slowly. You've earned the slow one.

Concept drink — not yet tested against bar inventory. Swap the rum for whatever's actually behind the well before this goes on a menu.
