International Dog Day: Sit. Stay. Have a Drink.

PORTLAND, OR — August 26 is International Dog Day, a holiday invented to honor the loyal, the eager, the ones who'd follow you anywhere and thump the floor when you walk in the door.We know a few of those.
To every pup who's ever padded across this floor on all fours, every handler who's ever held the other end of the lead, and every alpha, beta, stray, and mutt who's still figuring out what they are — this one's for you. And to our friends at PDX PHA — Portland Pets and Handlers — who've been part of this pack for as long as anyone can remember: welcome home. You never need an invitation, but here's one anyway.
A few things we've learned from the pups
Nobody's happier to see you. Not your ex, not your accountant, not your mother. Walk into this bar on a pup night and someone will lose their entire mind that you exist. Try to find that anywhere else.
Hoods off at the bar is a courtesy, not a rule. But the bartender does like to see who he's serving.
"Good boy" is a complete sentence. It works on pups. It works on handlers. It works on the guy at the pool table who just sank the eight. We've tested it.
The mosh is the purest thing in this building. A pile of grown men in the corner, wrestling, howling, biting nothing, hurting no one, having the kind of fun most people forgot how to have at eleven. If you've never seen it, come see it. If you've never joined it, come sit at the edge and someone will come sniff you out.
Handlers do the real work. Water. Snacks. Keeping the pack together. Making sure everyone goes home with the right people. It's the same job we ask of every good bartender, and we don't say thank you enough. Thank you.
Today
You're welcome here every day. Today we're just saying it out loud. Bring the hood, bring the tail, bring the leash, or bring nothing but a wagging attitude — the patio's open and the water bowls are full.

Today's drink: The Good Boy
Sweet, a little fizzy, goes down easy, and you'll want another one immediately. Like the pups, it doesn't overthink it.
The Good Boy
1½ oz gin
¾ oz peach liqueur
¾ oz fresh lemon
½ oz honey syrup (1:1)
Shake, strain into a tall glass over ice
Top with soda
Garnish: a dog-bone-shaped treat on the rim if the kitchen's feeling it, a lemon wheel if it's not
The Handler — same drink, hold the soda, served up in a coupe. Somebody's got to keep a clear head.
